An HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) is NOT defined as an emotional time bomb whom you must tip-toe around, although that trait could fit any type of person.

An HSP has an acute response to external stimuli. We take in a lot from our environment and process it deeply. And we care so much about almost everything. This can lead us to be exhausted and overstimulated, but we also tend to pick up on important cues, see the big picture, and care well for others.

We are not weak. We add spice and beauty to life. We have strengths and weaknesses like everyone else.

You may relate to some of these additional HSP characteristics:

  • Empathetic

  • Emotional

  • In tune to subtle things in the environment

  • Deep in thought

  • Deeply moved by the arts (including music) and other beautiful things

  • Forward thinking

The term HSP was coined by Dr. Elaine Aron in the ‘90s. High sensitivity is a trait, like left-handedness. It is not a diagnosis, condition, or ailment. For more detailed information, see Elaine Aron’s website.
